Friday 28th September @ The Croft, Bristol

DRAGONS - "Every now and then, a record comes along that takes your breath away on the very first listen. Here are the roses, the debut LP from the enigmatic electronic rock duo Dragons, is one of these records. This is a work of unapologetic melodrama and self-possession, a serious statement of intent that imprints itself indelibly on the soul. Lyrically, the songs are devastating in their bleakness. They come steeped in sepulchral gloom, conjuring disorienting images of graphite skies, monochrome city streets and isolated figures languishing in the shadows. Where is the love? a work of sombre, sinister beauty, is the stuff of gothic nightmares while the eponymous opener (“I’m sitting half naked/my heart racing/my soul long dead”) is a heartfelt paean to alienation, even if it concludes on a more hopeful note. Singer Anthony Tombling Jnr sounds like the weight of the world rests exclusively on his shoulders while David Francolini’s drumming conjures an atmosphere of ferocious, slow-burning intensity. The tension reaches boiling point in Lonely tonight, searing with the suggestion of a relationship gone bad. If all this sounds like an unlikely formula for a pop record that’s because it is. But it is Tombling Jnr and Francolini’s willingness to engage with the darker side of human experience that gives their music urgency and depth, rather than weighing it down with emotional baggage. In an era of bland musical commercialism, Dragons arrive like a breath of fresh air in a sticky sauna. Here are the roses is a tremendous record – visceral yet captivating, experimental yet full of heart. Listen to it. You won’t hear anything else like it."

ANGEL TECH - Bristol pop subversives Angel Tech launch their new album. Merging blissed-out electronica with the rattle and clatter of a 3-piece guitar band, Angel Tech play songs with almost hymnal melodies and Beach Boys harmonies: powerfully minimal one moment, a huge joyous see-sawing wall of noise the next; echoes of New Order, Bjork, My Bloody Valentine and Seefeel.

£5 Adv - 16+ - Doors @ 8PM

So are Dragons really a groundbreaking alternative rock band, or are they Spinal Tap AOR?

Alex - they're just like Joy Division/New Order type stuff really.
But they seem to have a maaaad fanbase, the cooler was REALLY busy when they played.
I recall wanting to stab myself in the eye.

There was a funny moment where me and max had already resigned to sitting on the sofa at the side of the room.. rose walked past us, I screamed at max (they were also very loud) "she ain't gonna last long" and about 20secs later we saw Rose approaching us with a bit of a gurn on.  It was funny.

ANGEL TECH - Bristol pop subversives Angel Tech launch their new album.

Hey! Wait! We're launching a new album? Shit!

- Oh, hang on. Maybe we're just launching the last one again.

Yeah. That makes sense.

In my experience most album can be just have one long gestating launch period, starting from the date you first start selling it, stretching through to an official album launch gig, to every time you play in a new place and on it goes....

Are Dragons the band with at least one ex-Darkstar member in them? I didn't mind the odd Darkstar song, but the Dragons stuff I listened to online was pretty dire...all the same, I'll bump this for the benefit of Le Tech!

Yes it's Dave Francolini.  He used to the the drummer in Levitation too. I think he's a rather good tub thumper. I think they're more Depeche Mode than anything else and that makes it difficult for me to watch.

I also used to be in Dalmaine with the guitarist (picured).

I have to go to this and that is all I'm saying on this subject.

That's doing a fairly major disservice to Depeche Mode, Dan. Just heard the MySpace tracks...hmmm...

I liked Dalmaine.

I seem to remember seeing Darkstar at the Fleece and thinking he was an excellent drummer, in fact I remember that more than the songs themselves, to be honest.  I read after the event that Will Crewdson who used to be in Rachel Stamp is now in Dragons, too...I liked Rachel Stamp but that's a strange combination!
